Robert Vowles
Born in Wells and now living locally, Robert is married with two daughters and three grandchildren.
After completing his secondary education in Wells he was given a bursary from a locally based manufacturing firm of international repute. This enabled him to further his education by studying various diverse business orientated subjects that included Accountancy, Law, Geography, Statistics, Economics, and Economic History; first at Strode College, Street, and then by attending the Bristol College of Commerce.
After conclusion of his college studies, and a brief spell in industry, Robert joined Hucker & Booker (then based at Penniless Porch in the Market Place) as a trainee in the early 1970s.
Robert soon assumed responsibility for his own portfolio of clients. He was later appointed training manager and became audit compliance manager in 1996. Appointed a director of Chalmers HB in May 2002, Robert brings a wealth of local knowledge to the practice and a vast experience of the commercial sector in the region.
Robert retired as a member of the board in April 2016 but remains working at the firm as a Consultant.
He lists his interests, other than his family, as first and foremost, being painting (principally wildlife subjects). He has exhibited at various venues throughout the South West of England and his work is held in a number of private and corporate collections. In recent years his output has been limited by the pressure of work and it’s on record that his last exhibition was during the year prior to the introduction of self-assessment.
Other interests include: Ornithology, Travel, Reading, Music, Theatre, Gardening, Collecting Antiques (Victorian moulded glass, and classic wristwatches) and Napoleonic History.
